The Fae Tales Discord is definitely open!

A heads up before anyone joins, here's a brief overview of the rules/notes:

18+ only

No TERFs or antis (if you're someone who says 'it's morally wrong to ship X content or ship' I literally mean you - not you anon, but like, the people who live this way)

No Gen-AI content or art

LGBTQIA+ friendly space

When using spoilers for disturbing content, warnings for what that content is, are necessary beforehand.

You're responsible for yourself, mute channels that make you uncomfortable.

It's a spoiler heavy chat.

Angry rants and venting have their own dedicated channel, try and keep the really intense stuff there.

No DMing people without in-server permission, or without that person having explicit bio permission that they are open to DMs.

Glossary

Assignment: The person you are assigned to make a gift for. You will receive a list of their requests and pick one to make.

Canon Tag: A tag that has been used enough that AO3's volunteers have organized into the tag list. These are the ones that appear on the dropdown menu when you're entering tags.

DNW: "Do Not Want," a list of things you do not want included in a gift for you. Everyone is encouraged to have one of these, and it must be followed by your gifter. DNWs must be reasonable, clear, and polite, but they can be petty ("none of this popular ship").

Exchange: A "gift exchange," where everyone receives a gift of a fan creation, and everyone makes a gift of a fan creation.

Match: When you offer something someone else requests, or you request something someone else offers, you "match" with them! You will need to at least have one offer that matches someone else's request in order to participate.

Offer: When you sign up, you will make a list of things you "offer" to create.

Pinch hitter: Someone who makes an emergency gift for someone whose gifter dropped out. You are welcome to participate only as a pinch hitter.

Request: When you sign up, you will make a list of things you "request" other people create.

Tag nominations: A period of time where people can nominate the relationships and AUs they want involved in the exchange. These will be the ONLY relationships and AUs permitted, so you want to nominate tags!

Treat: An extra gift you make with no expectation of a gift in return! You can make them for anyone in the exchange, whether or not you're assigned to them. It's just a fun and nice thing to do!

Gift Minimums:

Fic: 1000 words, with an ending

Art: A drawing completed to a level you would normally post as "finished"

Rules for Participating: 

You must join the Discord server and follow all rules listed there.

You must be 13 or older.

You must have an AO3 account, sign up through AO3, and post your gift on AO3. AO3 accepts fan creations of all types.

You must do your best to make a gift that meets the minimum requirements, and that you think your recipient will like, within the time of the event.

You must contact a moderator as soon as possible if you think you will not finish your gift in time.

You must keep your gift and recipient anonymous until creator reveals.

FAQ

What counts as a fairy tale?

I am using a broad definition! Any story that contains fairy tale elements: enchantments, curses, witches, wizards, warlocks, magic, talking animals, fairies, fae, trickery, etc... is allowed in the exchange! This could include a classic fairy tale, like Hansel and Gretel; an adaptation like Tangled, Ella Enchanted, or Land of Stories; or even an original fairy tale!

During tag nominations, people will "nominate" the specific AUs (fairy tales) they want included. These will be the only ones eligible for the exchange, so get an AO3 account and participate in tag nominations if you want to make sure something is included!

What if I don't match with anyone?

If no one wants to receive what you offer to make: We will give you an opportunity to offer more things. If you do not want to, unfortunately, you will not be able to participate in the exchange.

If no one offers to make what you want to receive: You can still participate. We will put you up as a pinch hit, meaning people can offer to make a gift for you without being assigned to.

What if I don't get a gift?

We will not reveal the works until everyone has a gift. If no one picks up a pinch hit, the exchange will remain closed until someone does. Everyone who participates will receive a gift.

What isn't allowed in the exchange?

For the comfort of the most number of participants: noncon, incest, bestiality, romantic relationships between characters who are canonically adults (over 18) and characters who are canonically minors (under 18), and NSFW are not permitted.

Considering the series, graphic violence and major character death are allowed, but only if the recipient says they're okay with receiving them.

My recipient requested ten things! How many do I have to make?

Only one! You can choose any of your recipient's requests to make, even ones you didn't originally offer.

Can I make more than one gift?

If you have more than one AO3 account, you may sign up multiple times. But please only do this if you're sure you can finish both gifts in time!

You can also be a pinch hitter, filling in for people who drop out, or make "treats"--extra gifts just for fun. But you won't receive extra gifts for either of these things.

General Rules:

1. This exchange is anonymous until gifters are revealed. Please do not reveal yourself to your giftee until after the exchange is over.

Rules About Turning In Gifts:

1. If you do not turn in your gift to Ao3 before the deadline, I will assign a pinch hitter to complete a gift for your giftee and you will not be able to post your gift in the exchange collection.

2. If your gift is done but you’re having technical difficulties, please put in an ask or contact me directly on my main blog or via Discord.

3. If you realize you won’t finish your gift on time, please contact me immediately so that I can assign a pinch hitter.

4. If you are doing a graphic, gifset, video, or similar gift and feel the need to watermark or include your name/url on it before your identity has been revealed that’s totally fine. I understand that people get nervous about their art getting stolen or saved without permission. This is supposed to be fun, not anxiety producing.

5. All gifts have to be complete when you submit them. You’re welcome to upload drafts, but make sure that whatever you upload can stand alone if it goes up like that. Please do not put in random drabble bits or placeholders.

6. Once the gifts are posted, commenting on your gift is required. Everyone works very hard to make a gift their giftee will love, and it’s very important to be sure they feel appreciated for putting the time into it!

Guidelines for Gifts:

Drabbles:

The minimum word count is a thousand words, but writing more is highly encouraged.

All drabbles should be new. In other words, no continuing previous works that you’ve posted before (that will reveal your secret identity and require your giftee to go back and read old stuff you’ve done to enjoy their gift). You are, of course, allowed to add to the piece after it’s been posted if you want to.

Asking a beta or friend to look over your work is totally fine, just make sure you swear them to secrecy so that your giftee can be surprised ;)

Gif Sets:

Gifsets should include four gifs at minimum.

If you wish, you can include a caption such as a mini-drabble, line of dialogue, or small description. You can also add a full drabble if you want. I doubt anyone will complain :)

Graphics, Manips, Aesthetics, and Moodboards:

Two images minimum for graphics and manips.

Eight panel minimum for aesthetics and moodboards.

Fun New Facts/Details About Artagan From His Comic Series

(spoilers for the tales of exandria ii: artagan comic run! this was such a (fey)wild ride to read 💚)

-this is the second comic to feature artagan with freckles & extremely expressive ears, and also portrays him with catlike eyes. he can also grow a tuft of a chin-beard! my bearded artagan agenda wins

-we know from egtw that artagan was originally banished from exandria for creating a cult around a whale carcass. we learn in this comic series he named said whale fucking mister demeanor.

-he has been to fey court 4,012 times, by his approximation

-if this wasnt a more blatantly obvious fact than "the sky is blue": artagan is bi/pan. but cannot in any capacity keep up any relationship.

-the first mortal he ever met and befriended was a human named gol. at first gol thought he was an angel or savior but by the end he felt artagan was a curse from the nine hells, for all the chaos & discord he wrought on his village, turning them against each other via pranks and then. whale carcassing

-want to know why arti hates the theatre? good news, we now know! he used to adore the stage before a few fae put on a play mocking his entire life. he interrupted, threw a fit, and said he'd improv his role, but was boo'ed for interrupting the show. so. he set the stage on fire. yes there was a kill count. no he does not care

-he has a unique relationship to keyleth. she's still pissed at him for killing vax, but she is the only one in the fey court hearings he trusts to help him escape - and she does, as artagan points out she owes him for vilya. she drags him through (literal) mud about his actions and does not hold back on how disgusting she thinks he is, but she snaps him into near-clarity, and she's surprised but accepts that humility.

-the term Jestie is canon. i win!

-this isnt a new fact but god. jester & arti love each other so much.

-keyleth & jester band together and are the only two to defend artagan in court, keyleth even going against vox machina's judgement. both acknowledge he has (indirectly) saved the world and shown kindness to them, and jester insists that he is changing (and artagan thinks, he is. he really, really tried to be good, for them. "oh, gals. i may not have always done good, but... those times, i really did. for them, i did."

-sammanar & elmenore are astounded anyone would defend artagan, but lower his sentence, from eternal imprisonment...

the end of the fourth & final issue stated to be continued at the end, so we'll see where this goes! i have only a rough idea where in the timeline this series takes place, post campaign 2, but this is definitely a new development i am curious to see if permanent. even in echoes of the solstice i think that canon can fit somewhat if we stretch it but i really dont know when this mortal stretch begins or maybe ends! either way, he's presently utterly terrified.

But I gotta say this. Reader reminds me and gives off Yaelokre vibes-

If you haven’t heard abt who or what yaelokre is, they’re a music artist that makes absolutely beautiful little songs with amazing illustrated images! With interesting characters, storytelling and all that silly Willy stuff!

I wonder, is reader the type to also create their own stories using music?

Hi 🛎️anon! Good to see you again!

Currently I’m in Germany (which is why I’ve been more inactive than usual lol) which has been amazing so far! Tomorrow I’m gonna see Poland!

Determination y/n loves to sing and play! It was something they mainly learned from Brook’s crew and just carried with them and inspired them to learn more instruments. In a kinda sad way they use it to fill the silence of the days they’ve spent afloat with no one, as well as keeping themself from going mad. But besides that I think they just like playing to make others happy, because they’re a chill little bean.

But as for Yaelokre, I love their music! I’m not up to date with their lore since it’s on a discord channel and I’m too antisocial to join it lol. But I really enjoy their vibe and the folk inspired music and imagery they use. I’ve always been a sucker for woodsy and fae stuff so it’s right up my alley, along with like the oh hellos and Celtic women.

I definitely can see the comparison of determination! Y/n and them. A bunch of gremlin children playing music in the woods, y/n would definitely sport a crow mask and cloak with gold shiny star bits. I also imagine y/n has definitely add their own songs and music, though they would typically play it in the time they thought no one was listening.

Y/n typically likes playing songs they’ve learned on the sea as a sort of tribute to the old sailors that used to sing them. Binks booze for example is one they hold onto for the memory of Brook and because they played it for Roger as well. Though in the dead of night or alone they would play their own songs and scores. Most I’d imagine would be somber, perhaps even a bit sad but within their music lies an underlying tone of hope and joy just needing a little nudging to be free.

I like the idea of Luffy hearing it one night and begging y/n to play more of their own music. So, very slowly they begin to do so while the crew listens and overtime those joyous beats start becoming more prominent.

I didn't develop many holidays, but I do have one's 14th birthday being a big deal in Stagorism! Also, here's the oceanfolk tradition I came up with with @welcome-back-to-hoimycraf a bit ago:

Bestowal: Oceanfolk give shells to those they care about and they wear them on their person as a display of their love. They start wearing them and giving them out when winter turns into spring. There are different shells to show different types of appreciation, care, and love. Oceanfolk tend to wear a lot of shells on their clothing. The shells given are worn as necklaces/bracelets/hairpieces/etc for the spring and they are later sewn into clothes. The shells are passed down and reused, meaning many oceanfolk wear shells their ancestors had worn before. When they don’t want them anymore, there are “take-a-shell, leave-a-shell” spots. Oceanfolk can trade shells there, donate shells they don’t want, or take shells to be able to use if they can’t go out to find their own for whatever reason or if they just want extra for xyz.

cowries/olives - for those you would like to acknowledge but don’t know well such as coworkers and classmates! They are common and they are the kind of thing you have children gather for activities when teaching them about the tradition

bonnets - to give to those you want to know better for xyz reason

Rivendell and Grimland: Common and Elven Ocean Empire: Common and Oceanic Mezalea and Overgrown: Common and Faeish Undergrove: Common and Grovic Gilded Helianthia* and Mythland: Common

*Most empires have some who speak languages outside of their official languages (/the languages listed after their names here) but it tends to stick to what it is said. Gilded Helianthia is the most diverse with languages that are regularly spoken due to their protective but open nature (meaning they have clear laws giving people protections as long as they aren't felons of some sort and even then they still have some rights and protections). A way to think about it is how, in America, English is the dominant language and the one that is very convenient to know just for functioning there BUT it is not the official language. People can speak as they would like in their own homes and communities and can get interpreters if needed. This is funny because Mythland (which also mains in common and common only) doesn't have a diverse language population. It doesn't even have a diverse population in terms of race either. They are mostly human and typically scare other races away by being fairly... harsh? mildly (or not mildly- that is up to you to decide) sadistic? demanding? standoffish? people. Plus, they don't have separation between church and state like the other empires do and they are fairly firm about their beliefs.

Also, I believe that common was originally developed in human colonies. Humans were the ones who attempted to reach out first which is why there were many translations made and, eventually, the human language became common. Common is considered the easiest language to bounce off from. Elven to oceanic can have really harsh translations but elven to common or oceanic to common is a little easier to interpret.

Describing Their Languages

Assume that, when reading, the characters are speaking common unless signified otherwise through symbols around the dialogue.

Common ; {Elven} ; |Oceanic| ; [Grovine] ; ~Faeish~

Common was initially a human language, but the humans put in the work to figure out translations between their language and the languages of those around them. Over time, the language evolved and was accepted as a primary way to communicate, meaning that (in the current day of this world) Common is going to be found in all the empires. It is the language used for trade and travel so every place has those who can speak it. That being said, some of the places also speak other languages. Common tends to be the most used with its uses so it's more likely to see someone only use common or to be multilingual though that doesn't always happen!

Elven as the language itself doesn't differ much between Rivendell and Grimlands. The part that differs is that their accents have fairly drastic changes to the point they sound weird/off to each other, but they can understand each other easily apart from the accent and regional differences. It just takes a moment to process the words if the other's accent is fairly thick. {elven}

Oceanic is fairly exclusive for it includes both verbal and nonverbal communication (an example of the nonverbal communication is their fins flicking in certain ways; most don’t pick up on the nonverbal signals unless they are oceanfolk)- it also isn't used much above water because 1) no one uses it but oceanfolk so they usually just use common above water 2) there is also no reason to use written (technically carved) oceanic above water either because paper doesn't last long when wet so oceanic is only used underwater because it was designed to be carved into things. It is used above water when two oceanfolk want to speak together without others knowing what they’re saying or out of habit but, even then, they are still likely to use common and just whisper. |oceanic|

Grovine was developed a long time ago as a way to communicate without spoken words. The gnomes used to live in a harsher place over a millennium ago where there would be lots of predators and dangers lurking. They have since moved and the language developed (as all do over time) so it can now be written and spoken if desired. The spoken version isn't very popular (or widely used) compared to the signed version. Most gnomes prefer to use common when speaking in order to relate to (and be taken seriously by) the other empires more. Most gnomes are (at least) semi-fluent in both languages (common and grovine) but tend to prefer one over the other based on how much (or little) they travel or deal with other empires via trade, diplomacy, politics, etc. [grovine]

Faeish has slightly different dialects, seeing that the two empires (Mezalea and Overgrown) who have more faeish speakers are far away from one another. Think of it like British and American English but for faes. You can understand what each other is saying most of the time but there are words and phrases and such that differ. ~faeish~

Religious Beliefs

Scott and Xornoth both believe in Aeor and Exor. I see it with similar dynamics of the Christian God/Devil and Abel/Cain scenario. A sense of duality in how the people who believe in them see them though I imagine neither god is fully good nor fully bad. Instead of a heaven and hell, they believe in reincarnation. Stags are considered sacred (and aren't hunted) and Rivendellian royalty has taken them to be symbolic of their rule (hence why Scott and Xornoth have stag crowns). [Stagors/Stagorism]

Jimmy and Lizzie believe that the ocean itself is some sort of god or higher power. The ocean provides the oceanfolk with sea creatures that can provide help and/or food. The sea creatures that die get to help bless an oceanfolk with their connection to the ocean and live through them. Oceanfolk being blessed by the sea creatures (done before they are born) is how they get the features they have. Example: Jimmy was blessed by cod so he has cod features such as scales, fins, a tail, etc. Joel claims he's not religious because he doesn't see the Mother Tree as a religion. It could be classified as being spiritual but the faith in the Mother Tree is classified as a religion in other empires. Mother Tree does obvious acts of power (an example is that Joel was born through the Mother Tree) and she actively helps Mezaleans by watching for them, keeping their land lush, etc. Gem is what I'm calling a polytheist. She believes that every god/belief is true. The existence of one doesn't disprove the other. She doesn't actively worship a specific god but she has great interest in all of them and thinks they all have their purposes.

Fwhip is an atheist, point blank. He's not foolish enough to deny that "god-like" acts happen but he doesn't think it's actually caused by gods. Everything (in his mind) can be explained by magic or manipulation, not by a higher power.

Katherine believes that gods influence everything and she doesn't want to offend any of them but her focus (or "main religion") is her faith in The Spring. The Spring heavily influences Overgrownians. Nature is heavily linked with their beliefs. The weather where they live feels like it is always springtime so when the temperature drops a lot, something is wrong and people get worried. The Spring also controls who is the Guardian and makes the separation between church and state (if you could call it that) very slim. The Blossom family (it has become a strong family name to the point everyone somewhat directly related is called to be a part of House Blossom) has been granted priority based on the act of a very distant ancestor to those who live now. The title doesn't get passed down every generation (it can skip one or several) but, when The Spring thinks someone is ready or would be a good fit, it will call to them and they will become the next Guardian. The Guardian is placed in charge of the empire but they often get a lot of help from others in power (such as other House Blossom members).

Sausage and Joey believe in The Blood King. Blood sheep are considered worthy sacrifices for The Blood King so they are well taken care of before then to appease the Blood King. The Church of the Blood Sheep is very prominent in Mythland to the point there is no separation between church and state. The religion is very blood and sacrifice-based. There are a lot of offerings given in exchange for prosperity, fortune, power, etc. [Hemalists/Hemaism]

Pearl is very much agnostic. She doesn't care deeply about religion whatsoever. She just kind of does her own thing and has no problem engaging in religious activities (as long as she's not against what is being done but she usually isn't) with you if you ask.

Shrub is more spiritual than religious, though it is considered a religion by other empires. They feel connected to wolves and have deep care for the Mother Wolf but they don't worship them. The wolves are more companions and protectors than gods. They do believe there are spirits around that they can't see. They don't believe they are all necessarily good and have their best interests at heart but they believe spirits do exist. The belief can be compared to modern witchcraft (not Wicca or Pagan but the spiritual witchcraft element) for they have protection charms, rituals for good fortune, etc.

How the fantasy races classification work

There are five base races I am playing with within this world: elves, faes, oceanfolk, gnomes, and humans. There are mixed races but back to that in a moment.

Elves have the same chance of having wings as one is inheriting a certain hair color. Wings tend to be a passdownable genetic trait but they are not as common as fae having wings. They are also likely to have magic but not every one. Some also are more skilled or in touch than others. They have pointed ears and are tall.

Oceanfolk don't typically do magic. There are magic-esc things that just come with being an oceanfolk. Oceanfolk are blessed with their features by the spirits of past sea creatures. If they have ear fins, tails, scales, whatever else, those are from the sea creatures that bless them. They also have a way to breathe underwater, typically gills.

Faes can almost always do magic. It is a part of them, some are simply more skilled than others. Full or mostly full faes almost always have wings. They are average height (around typical human height) and have pointed ears.

Humans can do magic and some have magic predisposed to them but, much like the gnomes, they don’t often do magic in the way elves and faes do. They tend to be an average height, have rounded ears, and do not have wings ever, unless they are mixed race. More on that in a moment. 

Gnomes are short. Very short, compared to everyone else. They do magic but it is more in the way of charms and rituals, much like witches in modern day. Many gnomes have connections to wolves and can speak to them. It is less significantly less common, but gnomes can be born with wings. Their ears are technically pointed but it is more of a rounded point and they are small/short. 

Mixed races are not uncommon, but they are classified in certain ways.

Demifae are those who are part fae. Typically they are referred this way if most of their physical traits lean fae. Elflings are similar for they are part elf and mostly show elven characteristics.

Those are the only two terms used for mixed races because of a number of things. 

Humans dont tend to have any significant differences that affects an individual a certain way. If you are part fae, but you present mostly human, you may technically still be a demifae but you are more likely to just call yourself human and maybe specify you have fae heritage. Same with the other races.

If you are part elf and part fae, one typically shows itself as more prominent. The wings are a big factor in that because they have different kinds of wings. Those who are part elf and fae almost always end up with wings because you have two sides with the potential of giving you a winged trait. If you ended up with fae wings, you would most likely be classified as a demifae over an elfling and vice versa.

If you are part gnome, since the height and proportions tend to be vastly different, it is fairly easy to spot. You might use the term “demifae gnome” or “elfling gnome” if you have enough traits of both. If you grow to a taller height than most gnomes, you would typically just refer to yourself as having gnome heritage than being a gnome yourself- at least on documents and such.

Oceanfolk traits trump everything else. You can have oceanfolk heritage and not be oceanfolk but if you have oceanfolk traits, all other traits are the ones called fae/elf/human/gnome heritage. Oceanfolks don’t tend to follow genetics as closely because oceanfolks are blessed by sea creatures. If you have the traits and the ways to breath underwater, you are oceanfolk. You will not see a winged oceanfolk unless the wings are magic or an elytra. This allows for two full siblings being classified two different ways if one was blessed and one wasn’t. In addition, this is why those from the Ocean Empire are called oceanfolk instead of a name such as “Mezaleans” or “Grimlanders” because you almost have to be oceanfolk to live there fulltime due to the environment.

Greetings, folks! This week we’re highlighting Mamó’s homestead - her hut between the Forest and the Bog. Our Art Director, Morgan, goes further into detail on the design.

When Henry and I were first pinning down concept art ideas and inspirations, I knew I would have to shift my style in a direction I’ve not typically explored in my work (in a good way!). I’ve been studying gouache as a medium for a little bit, and a large inspiration for Henry was the Random House Book of Fairy Tales, a collection of illustrated folk tales from his childhood. I drew a lot of inspiration from Eyvind Earle, the graphical illustration master and a huge inspiration to make art in my youth. In my research, I also studied the style of Little Golden Books from the 1960s. I had a hand-me-down set from my mom, which I read a whole lot as a kid. These all felt like a good base to evoke a feeling of a fairy tale we’ve heard in our childhood. In designing the homestead, I wanted to visually ground Mamó at a neutral point - on the west lies the dark bog and to the east is the forest leading to the realm of the fae. Ultimately, however one chooses to play the witch can make her the sinister presence the townsfolk say she is, or more benevolent than we were led to believe, and I felt it was important to visually communicate that in every environment in-game. I enjoy a story of a witch that can manipulate her scenery, creating a false sense of security to the observer. But is Mamó that type of witch or simply a self-sufficient old woman?

is Eckil a fae (something of a weird character study post)

Random thought passed around the discord (among other conversation) is that Eckil is fae-coded.

I mean yeah thinking about it, 'strange uncanny human in a moth wing cloak stealing people's bones' sounds pretty much like a fae sighting to be fully honest.

But then I started thinking about it so now we have more thoughts.

The main thought is that Eckil really is just, like, two steps away from being some kind of fae, if they aren't just straight up one already. It sounds weird but I do have points so here we go, mini-essay/character study time. [Upon reflection while writing, a dehumanization warning is likely warrented for the entirety of this writing as it does highly discuss themes of detacting from humanity and explicit seperation. I will also give warnings on mentions of death/killing, mentions of military service/being gone for long periods, commentary on social expectations of the Victorian Era, potentially some discussion of tramua, and general themes of social seperation/detactment/otherness.]

Uncanny

One of the main points here is Eckil's uncanniness. I know I don't post to Tumblr often on it yet (as it comes later in Eckil's Tale then we're at, and I don't usually just post on my ocs here) but thanks to MA developments Eckil has many traits that would be considered uncanny to regular people (more canines, more diamond/rhombus like irises, nails being more akin to claws, overall just...sharper then a human should be).

While it is rooted from MA, and therefore could just be explained as typical Neathy effects of such a study, the specific way it manifests does cause Eckil to seem more akin to something like a fae/changeling or skin-stealer then what often happens when folks change from MA (often becoming more like were-creatures, from what I've seen of some friends). With the potential of further change when they hit MA 7 (and some possible changes soon from hitting 5), I feel it just becomes more likely that they really do end up looking like a fae rather then a human. How MA affects a character's humanity is...up to interpretation, but for Eckil I do think there's a point where it began to seperate them from being fully human.

Something to say on this is also that Eckil actively accepts being inhuman, too. Less a point on them being a fae specifically but it feels important to acknowledge that Eckil does enjoy these changes on a personal standpoint (how they feel on how it makes others view them is...tricky, to say the least, but that's not the point of the post).

Slight Explanation

Another point is..where we start to get into more personality stuff then simply analyzing peligin.

Eckil wants to be seperate from (human) society and it's expectations. While this...arguably isn't a point as to them being a fae, it helps explain some of their actions and feelings, especially towards societal morals and limitations for certain topics (particularly on death and art).

It also makes for a very fragile and strange line when you factor in that Eckil doesn't want to be viewed as not themself. Identity and retaining it is something very important to Eckil, so is the notion that while someone can change they are still the same person. However Eckil's view on being percieved as human is remarkably different (in that they don't care if they are seen as human or something else).

Like I said, this is far less a point for them being a fae, and far more a general explanation of some of the other things I'm gonna bring up, and why they hold some of the views they do.

Viewpoints

Things that don't really factor into either proof of humanity or fae, but feel important to acknowledge as views Eckil has regarding humanity, themself, and morality (particularly due to relevance to the conversation). This will also elaborate some on why Eckil has these viewpoints, which will include references to their past on the Surface and potentially some on their time in the army. Perhaps I'll make another post elaborating on Eckil's life, but for now the references will be as brief as they can understandably be.

• Prior mentioned apathy towards being considered human or other (general thing they picked up from being in the Neath and around humaniod/inhuman folk)

• Prior mentioned apathy/hatred for socialital expectations (this bases some in their experiences of returning from being gone for years and having almost no-one actually listen when they tried to acknowledge that they saw some fucked up things while serving, as well as in being expected to be married and start a family, tying into the next viewpoint mention) [another note here; when they DID finally begin to act different (like expected) and it didn't fall into what people thought was respectable, Eckil did experience a period of being considered bad to be around and became something of a social outcast. Part of why this is hatred, and not simply a dislike or bordering on neutrality]

• Prior mentioned fear towards being considered someone else entirely (once again, based in returning from service and being treated like a entirely different man. Many experiences and shown ideals they expressed before leaving were considered void, and they were expected to act in a entirely different manner, be someone entirely new, and start their own family almost immediately despite this and trying to process everything.)

• Obsession with the human framework, particularly a focus on bones/the notion that humans are marvelous architecture (something that began to be seen early on in the Neath, and likely rooted from Surface experience, that has slowly developed over time, coming to a full realization upon going through Godfall and seeing the Shapeling Arts in full action)

• Change is good, change should be sought, change (particularly a high amount of change) is growth and beauty (this is something that developed during their service, and came into full consideration in the Neath (not that it didn't affect their actions on the Surface, however it factors more when you can literally change your own body parts) [note; Eckil views 'change' and 'developments' as two mostly seperate concepts. Developments are nuanced and can be bad.]

• Death is beautiful (came to light in the Neath after some conversations with the boatman and self-reflection)

• Art can change and be made into new art (this came somewhere inbetween 'death is beautiful' and 'humans are architecture', can't say exactly when)

• Not a viewpoint but a trait that they have yet to acknowledge that skews their mentality around this; Eckil experiences some meshing between themself and inhuman figures (the most prominent example being the Vake during BaL) and therefore has far less qualms around inhumanity. It's due to a few things but important to note as something that happens to them, especially when mental fuckery gets involved.

Actions

Some actions Eckil often takes that could be considered fae-like (or at least something most usual people aren't likely to be doing). Of course, this is mostly of my own analysis and I will have my biases around what is and isn't fae-like; if anyone has a behavior of theirs that I haven't mentioned that they feel could be noteworthy, feel free to say so.

• The whole bonestealing thing. That in general is something a little odd and was part of why I originally began to debate this.

• Connected to this, why they steal bones in the first place (they see it in itself as a art, that can make more art).

• Deliberate use of uncanniness, primarily for hunting or intimidation

• Remarkably casual about things most would consider unnerving or morally wrong (not entirely indicative of being fae-like and not just fucked up, but still) [note: there is some limits to this too.]

• Gets very...antsy about being expected to do something in line with society, regardless on if they would want to on a personal level

• Often simply appears at gatherings, despite being a terrible socializer and disliking encountering new people (admittedly very ????)

• Can be attracted via odd means (often by offering bone or speaking of hunting and murder)

• Despite usual bluntness, becomes very indirect about deals and vows, allowing for easy manipulation of interpretation

I have one tattoo but would like to get more! The one I have already is of the Outsider's Mark from the game Dishonored and its on the back of my shoulder. I would have gotten it on the back of ym hand like in the game, but I knew that would wear out pretty fast (and I also wasn't wanting something too painful for my first tattoo). I would like to get other ones, but because of reasons it might never happen.

I guess it depends what kind of mutual? If you mean the kind of mutual that I would politely nod at if we passed by in the street, then that really just happens by chance. I see a blog I like and follow them. Maybe they follow me back or were already following me 🤷‍♂️ If you mean the kind of mutual I cook blorbos with and bark at each other at all hours over blorbo thoughts then that isn't something that would happen through Tumblr alone I don't think. The mutuals I play pass the brain cell with are people I've had relatively frequent conversations with on discord so we know we just kind of click. I'm very bad at conversation (especially with new people) though so it can take a while for me to settle into frequent talking with someone 😅

🦋 ⇢ share something that has been on your heart and mind lately 

I wish I'd been surrounded by better people when I was younger. I've dealt with a lot of failure from the various adults in my life, and now that I'm an adult myself I'm having to fix all that and pick up the slack. I like to think there's another version of me in some alternate timeline that got to pursue the things they love and know themself much sooner than where I'm at now. Maybe they'd be completely different. Or maybe they'd be the same. It's just something I think about. (I really tried to think of a less depressing answer to this one but I am really just a melancholic sort of person through and through 😂)

🦴 ⇢ is there a piece of media that inspires your writing? 

Just...just one?? I can find inspiration from almost anything if its something that resonates with me. Music, video games, movies, books... But I suppose something I always come back to is fairy tales (and also fae creatures themselves). It's just something I grew up with and I have spent a lot of time being obssessed with the mythology and lore of them.

🐚 ⇢ do you like or dislike surprises?

It's a very situational kind of thing. Generally I hate surprises that mean a change of plans or things being sprung on me out of nowhere. But small things like someone saying "I got you X thing because it reminded me of you/because I know you like it" is always nice. Like I cried on my last birthday because my dad sent me flowers and I wasn't expecting anything 😂
